We are very excited to announce that Blue Ridge Flora has joined our broodmare herd in August 2018.
Blue Ridge Flora is an ACPS Inspected and Approved mare by Tre Awain De Valera; an ACPS Hall of Fame “An Tostal” stallion award winner. Flora’s English imported dam, *Hayselden Persephone is also in the ACPS Hall of Fame having won the Broodmare award.
A closer look at Flora’s extended family
Flora gets her name from the Circus Flora which her sire Tre Awain De Valera performed in. De Valera was bred and stood at Three Creek Farm. He was notably calm and quiet especially for a stallion. He showed Grand Prix dressage with Mari Monda Zdunic. De Valera passed away at Three Creek Farm in 2013 at 33 years old.
Flora’s dam, *Hayselden Persephone, has been a blue hen of a mare for Blue Ridge Farm. Two of her sons Blue Ridge Monroe and Blue Ridge Jefferson are ACPS Inspected and Approved stallions. Another of her foals Blue Ridge Penelope is a ACPS premium mare.
*Hayselden Persephone, was bred at the Hayselden stud by their resident stallion, Hayselden Bacchus. Bacchus is one of only a few stallions to be awarded Super Premium status by the English Connemara Pony Society (later replaced by the British Connemara Pony Society). In North America, Bacchus is most known through his ACPS inspected and approved stallion son, *Hayselden Perseus.
Flora’s grand dam, Cloonisle Coral Strand, was born in Ireland. She won the prestigious 1989 yearling filly class at Clifden. Coral Strand is a full sibling to Cloonisle Cashel; an enormously influential Irish stallion as he sired both performance and in-hand champions. Cloonisle Cashel himself won at the Clifden show twice; once in the 3 year old stallion class (1994) and in the 4 Years and Over Stallion class (1999). Notable offspring of Cloonisle Cashel include Silver Shadow who competed internationally in 1.30m pony classes and multi-year Clifden Champion, Glencarrig Prince.
Cloonisle Cashel is not the only stallion son Coral Strand’s mother produced. Her dam, Cloonisle Lady also foaled the stallion Dark Stranger who showed in 1.20-1.25m classes.
Coral Strand is by Abbeyleix Owen – a stallion who for Connemara enthusiasts hardly needs any introduction. This Clifden champion Connemara stallion was bred by Lady de Vesci who donated him to the CPBS where he stood as a Society stallion for over 20 years. He produced many wonderful ponies however his legacy is somewhat shadowed by his overuse in Ireland and the subsequent narrowing of the breed’s gene pool.
